Healthy Meal suggestions for Evergreen Restaurant

This is our go-to take-out Chinese place, since it's the closest to our place. No other reasons, just for the location and the convenience. The food is not authentic (we may be spoiled though... Being from Vancouver), and some food is just overly greasy. Th service isn't good nor bad, just typical "Chinese" place with their minimal service offered. We probably wouldn't dine in there, but we'd continue to get take-out when we're desperate, unless something better opens up closer to us.

I now have a new Chinese restaurant to go to on North Campus during my lunch breaks. A lot of people are hesitant to try Evergreen because it's located in the corner of a relatively empty looking strip mall or they remember the cramped atmosphere prior to their renovations. However, they have definitely improved since my last visit many years ago. Atmosphere: 5/5 The place looks beautiful and the plates and food presentation is on par. The bathrooms are also very clean which I know is usually a concern for Chinese restaurants. The service is also very friendly though they may be a bit timid due to English not being their first language. Do note that groups and families tend to eat here so it can get quite noisy! Food: 4/5 The food is better quality than other Chinese restaurants but it isn't that special either. I got their Curry Chicken lunch combo which comes with a spring roll and salad and it was quite filling. Price: 3.5/5 When comparing against other Chinese restaurants nearby, an $8.50 lunch combo seems expensive when compared to a $6-$7.50 alternative.

Never again!!! Pass this restaurant in a hurry. I recently moved back to the A2 area and was out house shopping with my mother and we drove past Evergreen. I used to eat there all the time in the early 2000's, the food was decent. Now the interior is nice and the food and the wait staff are HORRIBLE!!! We sat down and ordered two shrimp Pad Tai, an order of spring rolls and egg drop soup with crispy noodles. We ate the rolls and the soup came out. Yuck. It was extremely thick and the crispy noodles were extremely stale. We sat it to the side and awaited the main dish. The dish was presented and then we both took a bite and immediately regretted placing the fork into our mouths. It was rancid and tasted like a can of Guinness beer was poured on top to cover up the old rancid fish. The fish was so spoiled it was falling apart. You could pick up the entire noodle dish with your fork. We decided quickly that we couldn't eat the meal and very politely asked the waitress to remove the uneaten items and we would pay and leave. She proceeded to angry inform me of what it's supposed to taste like, as if I don't make this dish myself or have ever eaten it before. She angrily left and came back with a lowered bill but didn't remove the stale crispy noodles or congealed soup. At this point I wasn't going to give her a heart attack over three more dollars. I put the money on the slip and she picked it up and proceeded to yell in the restaurant about needing more money. I actually over paid by 75 cents so I calmly told her to check her math. I asked her three times to tell me how much money she had in her hand and how much was the bill. She was too busy creating a scene to count the cash correctly. At this point I wanted to talk with a manager. He was nice yet only spoke to praise his restaurant and bash the waitresses English speaking skills, blaming her behavior on miscommunication. I am totally appalled at the treatment my mother and I received at this establishment. Sadly to say this A2 staple has fallen from its pedestal and I will never return.

I'm really disappointed to be posting such a low rating. I've been going to evergreen since I was a little girl, going on more than ten years now. And they have always been hit or miss but lately it's been more miss than hit. They just redid the restaurant and it looks phenomenal but unfortunately the food hasn't gotten a face lift and in my opinion it's gone a little down hill. And they've raised the price, which I understand but if you expect me to pay more you better be providing quality product. Their staff is almost always very nice and attentive but the last few times the waitress gave us our food and didn't come back except to give us the check. I used to say evergreen was my favorite Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor but that is definitely not the case anymore!

I lived in China for 8 years and upon returning have always had a hankering for real Chinese food. This is one of the most authentic places outside of China I've been to. Add to this the grocery store next door, I thought I was back in the Middle Kingdom.

Ambiance is amazing. As someone who frequents Chinese restaurants, I am thoroughly impressed by the interior design of this place. It's modern, sleek, and clean, with tables and booths of all different sizes. The food is great as well. They have 2 menus here-- one for Chinese-speaking visitors and one for non-natives. So you can imagine the enormous range of food here. As I glanced around the restaurant, I saw plates of orange chicken and fried spring rolls at some tables, and plenty of authentic Chinese dishes at others. I ordered the eggplant, spicy lamb, and some seafood/veggies over crispy rice dish, all of which were delicious. I believe everyone will be able to find something here that will fit their palate. This has quickly become one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Ann Arbor, and I definitely will be visiting again!

Service is 5/5, but the food is about 3.5/5. The food could be a little less greasy.

Serve the community for 23 years, as well known restaurant, the food quality and hard working, Evergreen have good credit and repetition, the effect last several generations.but that does not mean everybody like it, Madam L, who are you? Why you post fake news? Why you defame Evergreen ?Why you lie to the public? This society need criticism, but that should be honest and fair

Evergreen recently remodeled. While still open in the old location, they were able to renovate the space next door adding modern decor and a nice bar. The new space looks great! It's very open with a lot of seating and light. My only "complaints" are that, well, it looks just like any modern bar/restaurant in Ann Arbor. There's nothing about this space that says "hey, we're a Chinese restaurant". The open space also means the dining area is a bit noisy but it's not too bad. With all that said, the renovation/expansion is only half done. The owners now plan to renovate the old space allowing for even more room. The new bar and liquor license add much more to the dining experience. I'm not certain but it seems they also updated the menu. They now have a traditional Chinese menu along with the old menu. Everything looks and tastes good. I'd give it 3.5 stars if Yelp allowed half stars.

When you move to a new place the ideal thing to do is embrace, embrace, embrace. It's your new home and you just have to deal. Unfortunately, very often this means if things aren't so great, like maybe the food, you also must deal. Not so at Evergreen thankfully enough. After months and months of miss, miss, and more miss, I think I've finally found a place comparable to home as far as Chinese Food. This coming from someone who lived not 20 minutes away, by train, from one of the country's largest, most exciting, and not to mention delicious China Towns. Anytime I walk in here, within minutes I am walking out with what I know is going to be some delicious wonton soup, and sesame, general, or orange chicken. I know the crab rangoon is going to be awesome and perfectly fried. I'm beginning to wonder how tasty their authentic fare is, because they've definitely gotten American just right. I've only ordered take out from here a handful of times (haven't sat in just yet), but I am never disappointed. It's the only place I order from when I'm craving such food.

I don't understand the hype for this place. Maybe I came on off day. The shrimp fried rice I had was quite terrible. The shrimp were tiny and appeared to have come from one of those frozen bags you can get at Walmart. The taste of the fried rice was also off. I've had much better tasting and more affordable (Americanized) Chinese food at other AA restaurants.

A little bit pricy but they provide really tranditional Chinese food. I will definitely recommend it to people who love traditional Chinese cuisine. The place just got renovated recently and is nice to stay. Con- get very crowded during weekends and Friday evening. Be prepared to wait for around 15 to 30 minutes.

Best Chinese food in town! It was strongly recommended by Chinese friends. If you like spicy food, their Sizchuan fish or beef is a good choice. Good service as well. The waitresses are very nice and smile a lot. It's a very comfortable dining place. Last time I was there, it's a waiter who's so kind and introduced lots of Chinese food. We tried Sesame beef. It's awesome! The best food and service ever.

This might be the best Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor, and the fact that this place gets 3 stars should show the overall (lack of) quality in the Chinese restaurants here. This is the only place that really serves authentic Chinese food, but the execution of it is mediocre. The twice cooked pork and boiled fish were sub par at best. The xiaolongbao (shanghainese dumplings) were okay, but that could be due to the state of delirium I was in to find a place that offered xiaolongbao.

Probably the best Chinese food in Ann Arbor. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. It's a little expensive, but that's because the portions are very nice. Tastes better than the average Chinese place.

The restaurant was renewed and looks new and big but price is the same as usual. That's a good point lol. I saw the waitress I saw and talked one year ago, which made me happy :)

I submitted an online order to Evergreen, got a confirmation email that they received the order and the estimated delivery time was an hour. After an hour and 25 minutes I called them after not getting the delivery. The women who answered said the order would have to be cancelled because they were just 'too busy' and they couldn't refund me I would have to go online. After an Eatstreet phone call (which was easy and immediately got the refund) I called Evergreen back because I was so appalled at the customer service I had just received. I asked to speak with the manager after the same women answered. After being put on hold she said that the manager was out and acting as if she just didn't talk to me. I explained the whole situation to her again, about not getting a delivery, being forced to cancel the order and again she just said yeah, we are to busy. No customer repair attempt, nothing. I will never eat there again.

With our recently rekindled love for Chinese food in US, we decided to try Evergreen again after many years. Erhhh! What a disappointment! They expanded and redecored, which looks really nice. Unfortunately not the food. We ordered a lamb noodle soup, a pork stew and a napa in gourmet broth. The meat in the noodle soup was so fat, big cubes with almost all white fat. Not sure which portion of lamb but really the worst pieces one can use for cooking. The tiny strips of lean meat you got out of it were pretty chewy, instead of tender. The pork dish was the best of the three. Although you could say they taste like wood. And very fatty. We know the pork stew is supposed to be rich and tender, which translates to fatty sometimes. But not as saturated in oil fat as the dish we had. The napa dish was the worst! This one is supposed to use good tender leaves from napa and bring out the fresh and sweet flavor from this traditional Chinese vegetable. What we got was the dry, chuncky outside leaves that I would discard for home cooking. The leaves were barely cut. Here is what happened in my imagination - the cook just peel a few leaves from a napa that sat in a corner of their kitchen for a week. He threw the uncut big chunks of napa into his wok, put in some "gourmet broth" and barely cooked it. Because the leaves tasted uncooked. I hate that I have to say so bad things about a restaurant ... but hey, I almost felt humiliated by being served with such low quality. The server was ok, taking care of your need, but not very welcoming.

I measure by three different things in comparison to Taco Bell: DECOR: Evergreen is tucked in a corner in a shopping plaza near the North Campus of Ann Arbor. From the outside you get the impression it's sort of run down because of where it's situated, but walking in, it's a very nice restaurant. There are white tables and it's quiet, which is nice. Way fancier in comparison to Taco Bell. 1 star for decor! SERVICE: I haven't eaten inside the restaurant since I get carryout. The meal is always prepared in a timely fashion and they are very friendly. The only thing is the food wasn't necessarily very hot so only a half star here. FOOD: I have gotten several entrees here: Hunan Beef, Beef Noodle Soup, and Beef with Kim Chi. All were very good. I also have gotten appetizers including the egg roll and dumpings which are good as well. I think it helps that this place is located next to a Chinese supermarket. I think the price is a little more than the average chinese restaurant, which is a negative. Two stars here. FINAL VERDICT: Is Taco Bell better? No. A good Chinese meal will always beat Taco Bell! Evergreen is satisfying and delicious. Just a forewarning you may need to microwave your food if you get carryout, but it'll still taste really good! If you got some money to spend and are in the mood for Chinese, try Evergreen!

It's the best Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor. Specially, I recommend the spicy food, like Sichuan boiled fish, house special spicy pot, cumin lamb and a lots of food,it's really tasty.

Best Chinese in Ann Arbor. Hands down. They have a traditional Chinese menu that serves more authentic dishes as well as an American-Chinese menu. We usually order off of the traditional menu because it's nostalgic to enjoy the dishes I had while I lived in China. Sichuan boiled fish, twice cooked pork, and cumin lamb are some of my favorites. Other places in A2 serve these dishes, but Evergreen prepares them the best in my opinion. Of course, their American-Chinese fare is great too: orange chicken, moo shu pork, and sesame beef.

So Ann Arbor doesn't have so many great Chinese restaurants, let alone authentic places. This place has got some solid authentic Chinese food, as well as their selection of more Americanized Chinese dishes. Very reasonably priced for the quantity and quality of the food, and cheap delivery! I almost always order here if I'm craving some good Chinese food on a lazy day. The Mapo tofu is soooooooo good, and tastes authentic! The chili oil is all there, and they even toss in the Sichuan peppercorns to give you that authentic, numbing spicy taste that is the hallmark of the authentic Mapo tofu! I almost always order this... One of the best I've ever tasted. I've tried some of their Americanized Chinese food too. Their chicken/broccoli is solid, they toss in bamboo shoots as well for some extra crunch! I like it a lot! Come to Evergreen for some awesome, authentic Chinese food. It's far from U-M campus if you're a student, but their delivery service is about 2$ to central campus, not including tip. If you ask me, that's a great price to satisfy your authentic Chinese cravings!

Best Chinese food I've had in Ann Arbor -- I've gotten the walnut shrimp, salt and pepper squid, fried rice, bubble tea, and a couple of other dishes I'm forgetting at the moment, but everything has been tasty. Staff is polite and speedy.

Good place for Chinese food. I like the soy milk here. Sweet! But it is not a regular place for food. A little expensive .

I hear some Chinese students mentioned a lot 豆花鱼, (Sichuan fish with tofu), so I assume it is good but it turned out to be a disappointment. Probably I had my expectation way higher than usual. Sichuan Fish with Tofu (豆花鱼), spice oily soup like with some pieces of fish and tufou. If you never ever have it in your life, go for it, and it probably surprise you. But if you had it before and I am sorry to say it is just OK. I like 京酱肉丝,Peking Sauce Pork, quite good though.

I have had many, many good meals at Evergreen over the past ten years or so. I've never once been disappointed. I usually get kung pal chicken or Kung pap tofu and both are delicious.

Evergreen is pretty good Chinese restaurant. I would recommend ordering off the authentic menu. The dishes on it are quite good. The regular menu is okay but just average fare. One stand out is the moo shu pork. Excellent combo of veggies and meat. But really, experiment with the authentic menu.

Excellent, it's the best Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor. As recommend, the spicy foods are first, eg. Boil fish. Others, like general tsous chicken is also good. There are too many delicious foods, just go to try, you will find your favorite.

Okay- drop in and do a to-go order. The restaurant is usually busy so that's a good sign- people in there eating meals. Looks clean and fine. The women who are at the reception area taking your order are professional and busy. Wait is 15 min. usually. But the prices are high for the quality and quantity. I'd prefer to have Happy Wok but it's too far from where I live to do the pick-up but it's not really that good. We usually feel like this is good food but not great. It's an expensive option even for eating in or taking out - I feel like the food could be more genuine and spicy. If you have a choice I'd suggest trying other spots even though this is fine - it's not going to be memorable.

OK. I just have to get this off my chest. I received some of the worst service I've ever had in my life today, which is amazing because I've seen it all. We were seated right away, but were not given menus. When our waitress came by five minutes later, we asked and she brought them. The dining room was packed and noisy, but dead silence ensued when one of our plates of food hit the floor on its way out to us. It happens, and our waitress was apologetic for the wait. BUT: my water glass stood empty for most of the time we were there. Now, I would like to directly address one of the waitresses with a serious pet peeve that comes from years of working in the industry. You know who you are: the one who walked by my table with a water pitcher on your way to re-fill your table's glasses. Remember? We made eye contact when you saw me looking at you looking at my empty water glass? Then you breezed right on by. BAD FORM! I don't care if you're not getting a tip from me--a CUSTOMER, seated before a plateful of spicy, salty food, is suffering with an empty water glass! FILL IT. You want customers to come back, right? Maybe ask for YOU because you were the one who so kindly brought them some water on their last visit? Seriously, it takes five seconds. Or at least mention to our waitress that one of her tables needs water. Don't like that waitress? DON'T TAKE IT OUT ON HER CUSTOMERS. It seems anticlimactic, after that tirade, to mention that I enjoyed my lunch of chicken Pad Thai. But I'm too annoyed to come back.

Mixed thoughts. Iv been seeking the best local Szechwan chicken and I tried this place today. Having not been educated on what traditional Szechwan dishes 'should' be like this one contained only chicken. No veggies or anything additional. I asked for extra spicy, I received what my opinion was zero heat. Taco Bell Hot sauce has more heat. It's indicated on the menu as spicy as well. Either way, It's a good place, what I ordered even though it wasn't what I was expecting, it was still good, yet unique.

Excellent Chinese restaurant for authentic cuisine. I took my west and east coast Asian relatives here (aka where they have a plethora of authentic options), and they gave it a thumbs-up. Recommended dishes: jalapeno beef tendon, bitter melon with cured meat, and ground pork and eggplant casserole. I do not recommend the garlic flavor baby pork ribs, and salt and pepper shrimp. Both were over-battered and over-fried. Hardly could get to the actual protein. I've also noticed that non-Chinese guests will automatically be given the American Chinese menu. Ask for the traditional Chinese menu - it's where the good dishes are!

It's one of the best Chinese restaurant around campus! You should definitely try Sichuan Fish and Mustard Plant with Stewed Pork! Nearly all the dishes are worth to try except the ones with Pork Ribs.

I actually didn't like this place much until I started ordering dishes from the traditional Chinese menu. Everything I've had from it is excellent! My favorites are the Eggplant Casserole, Bitter Melon and Cured Pork in Black Bean Sauce, and the Sweet and Sour Fish (from the traditional menu). Be adventurous and try some real Chinese food!

On a Chinese takeout kick, I've ordered Chinese for delivery twice in a row. Evergreen was the first of two restaurants my friends recommended to me. Actually, Evergreen was like the consensus pick of Chinese takeout/delivery among my group of friends. Maybe I didn't order the right items this go-round, but I have to disagree. I ordered shrimp fried rice and salt & pepper baby ribs (off the traditional Chinese menu-I'm sure they meant baby back ribs?). The food was delivered approximately on time as estimated by GrubHub (about an hour), but then the driver demanded a tip! I mean, dude, you already charged me a $2 delivery fee. Maybe if you got here a little faster? Anyway, it had snowed and I felt somewhat generous so I gave him a few extra dollars. It was unearned. The ribs were tiny and mostly fat, breading, and non-meat, with the occasional bone. There were probably 15 pieces total in there, but it wouldn't have been a very substantial dish. The shrimp fried rice, on the other hand, was pretty good, and the order came with an extra side of white rice, which I mixed in with the fried rice for another day. I can't say the food was horrendous, but it certainly wasn't anything special. Overall, the food wasn't a great value for how disappointing it was. And the delivery driver was a little off-putting. In all likelihood I'll try the place again, but I'll have to order something different next time.

Order from the Chinese menu it's a lot better, even though we found a wire in our food the other day (just be extra careful) The owner is a milf, the waitresses are cute, and food is decent, what else can you ask for ;)

I don't quite understand these negative reviews. Though they didn't cook all dishes perfectly but at least they cooked it in authentic Chinese way. And the service there is great. It's one of the most popular and high-rated Chinese restaurant among chinese students in Ann Arbor. If you do want to have good and authentic chinese food, go with a chinese and let him/her order. If you want American-Chinese food, go to Panda Express please. Stop complaining and confusing others! Thanks!

Try to order off the Chinese/traditional menu; the food is better, but it's more expensive. The lunch specials on the regular menu are cheap and satisfying.

This place serves standard Chinese food. I ordered 2 items off the traditional menu hoping it would result in a better meal and they were the higher points of the meal, but overall it was just okay food. The scallion pancakes were okay (a bit greasy), but the scallion pancakes I've had somewhere else knock these easily out of the water. I also ordered the Home-Style Chow Mien, which was fine the first night, but the leftovers were so-so. Lastly, the sesame chicken was a breaded disaster and sadly, the rest will be tossed. I always dislike when a restaurant is a miss, but I won't be going back.

Evergreen is in a strip-mall on Plymouth, but the interior design tries to help you forget that with its muted brown, cream and green colors. The space is fairly intimate and, when I went Sunday evening, busy but not crowded. The clientele at Evergreen was a great mix of people - super diverse racially, young and old, students and families. Along with their regular menu came a printed sheet with 'Traditional Chinese dishes' - less familiar vegetables and meats (intestines, tripe, etc), but a lot of things that sounded also delicious. It being our first time there, my husband and I ordered from the 'gringo' menu - the combination plates on the last page. I got the shrimp and mixed vegetables (subbed brown sauce instead of the white sauce that normally comes with it) and he got General Tsao's chicken. The combo plates come with rice (fried, white or brown for 50 cents more), a spring roll, and soup (egg drop, hot and sour, or wonton). The portions were well-sized and the food was tasty. My only complaint was that the spring roll was quite bready tasting with not much filling. But the fried rice was decent, the vegetables fresh, and the brown sauce flavorful. My husband's General Tsao's was crispy-fried dark meat chicken with a sticky sweet sauce - a nice typical version of the dish. Both the egg drop and the wonton soup are just as you would imagine them - warm and enjoyable, but not particularly creative. When they bring the check, in addition to fortune cookies, they also bring back a few slices of orange - a nice way to end the meal. In all, we thought that the food was great for the price, we found the atmosphere to be very relaxing, the service was quiet and efficient, and we look forward to going back and being more adventurous in our ordering.

Mediocre Chinese food at best. What made me mad is that a friend and I went here for our monthly lunch outing. I had a coupon. I had the coupon out when we first ordered and told the server that we had it. The exclusion on it was a combo - whatever that was supposed to be so we ordered what we thought were regular meals. The menu said nothing about a combo, but when they brought the food out they included a tiny egg roll and a nondescript salad which neither of us ate. We were later told that we ordered combos and our coupon would not be honored. We will not be back.

This was a favorite group lunch for a while, when I worked out at Domino Farms (nothing to do with the pizza business--they rent office space to a lot of other companies). Considering that Evergreen is hidden inside the Plymouth Road Mall, you wouldn't expect it to be so crowded. It's inexpensive and the food is good. Service is speedy enough to get you back to the office on time, even if you come with a large group.

The establishment has gone downhill over the last year or so. Evergreen used to be my family's go-to for Chinese, but the last few experiences we had were horrible. After our latest experience, we will no longer recommend them nor give them our business. Our delivery orders were consistently very late or incorrect. The second-to-last time we ordered delivery from them, an entree and two appetizers had been changed because they were "out of the ingredients." We were not notified, so we were unable to change the orders ourselves. Three people in my family (including myself) have SEVERE food allergies, so just changing a dish without notifying the customer certainly did not fly with us. Allergy issue aside, who changes an order without checking with the customer first?? I called Evergreen after the incident to explain why I was disappointed, there was no apology or attempt to rectify the problem. We also found hair in our food once. We ordered a meal for the family on a Monday night and were told it would be 30-45 minutes. An hour and a half later we still had no food and no phone call warning us the food would be late. At this point, the kids were unable to eat because they had left for hockey practice. When I had called Evergreen at the hour mark I was told they were very busy, and that the food was ten minutes away at most. The woman on the phone would not let me cancel our order. Over thirty minutes later the manager arrived with our food. When we told him the delivery taking twice as long as they had promised, cold food, and no phone call was unacceptable, all he did was say they were very busy over and over. No apology, no discount, no professionalism - from the MANAGER. We live ten minutes away and were frequent customers. If someone from the restaurant had called and told us what was going on we would have understood and just picked it up. He brushed it off, again, offered no compensation, and actually had the audacity to hold his hand out for a tip after we had paid him. No, buddy. Dine in experience is okay, but you have been warned about the hair in food and lack of professionalism should you have a problem.

In terms of the food it is okay, but in terms of price it is not so good. Decor is fairly nice for a chinese restaurant, but nothing exceptional. Their sliced duck was nice as they gave large chunks of meat unlike many other restaurants. They also had a nice amount of intestine in the intestine/tofu hot pot dish. However as stated above in relation to other chinese restaurants of relative quality the price was a little higher. That is not to say the food isn't bad. If you're looking for fairly decent chinese food without caring too much about price then you couldn't do too much worse. They do have good service and will attend to you constantly which is a nice bonus where it can be difficult to get people's attention at other joints. Their salt fried shrimp dish was a little differently prepared from other locations, but it wasn't bad, just different. All in all it's an okay place to get some more authentic chinese, but as a whole compared to the vast number of chinese restaurants it sits very much in the middle.

They serve American Chinese food with more authentic Chinese dishes like the lamb stew but they still don't taste like the Chinese food I'm used to. Their lamb stew was missing chinese black mushrooms (my fav) and had carrots instead. The lamb chunks were much bigger than the typical size but still very tender so no complaints there. I also had their fish in wine sauce, which is usually one of my favorites, but this tasted nothing like it. I couldn't even taste the wine, it was really salty. It did have the wood ear though. They are pricier than the typical Chinese restaurant but some of their dishes aren't served elsewhere and they deliver.

Looking for a cheap, eccentric place to eat near the workplace on Plymouth, I decided to give Evergreen a try. Unfortunately, it was not the taste sensation I was hoping for. First of all, Evergreen? I'm not sure what the significance of that is, but I guess its neither here nor there. Everything in this place is straight out of central casting for a Chinese restaurant in a strip mall. From the placemats to the plates, you've seen it all before. Again, not necessarily good nor bad, just standard. What's good? The service was amazing. The place was fairly empty for a Friday at noon, but still, impeccable waitstaff. And the value was strong. Salad, soup, tea, eggroll, fortune cookie, rice and meal for $7. Solid. The not so good - my general's chicken was about as spicy as Hannah Montana doing a J-Lo cover. Now I should note that they never asked how spicy I wanted it and I made no indication that I wanted it spicy - but usually with the general you get a little heat. This had none. That made me frown. So maybe I could ask them to turn up the heat and at least get me into Brittany Spears doing Charro territory, but until then, Evergreen (Evergreen?!?) is resigned to A-OK status.

I have eater here twice, once was dine-in the other was carry out. I will agree with the previous reviewer that the portion for take-out was smaller. I had a chicken dish that I didn't expect it to be battered & fried (and it was). I'm not a huge fan of their battered/fried chicken. The consistency of the coating seemed grittier than I would have liked and almost over-cooked. Also, the meat was only ok- not the highest quality. In general I don't mind dark meat...but this didn't seem to be the best cuts. I appreciate that they offer brown rice and salad substitutions. Food that others ordered looked great and I would give it another try and avoid the battered dishes with dark meet chicken.

This is one of my faves for Chinese food. My ex used to take me there every Sun after church for Chicken Fried Rice - Yummy...My ex - not the food! J/K Speaking of the food...it is great. He always ordrered Sweet & Sour Chicken & we shared. It was like getting 2 meals in one. I think I was the first one to get him to eat anything but Sw&Sr Ckn @a Chinese Rest. The staff was well dressed and wore what reminded me of Catholic School Girl uni's - White tops and black skirts. Everyone is very polite which is typical of my experience in Chinest places and spoke very little English - unfortunately also pretty typical. The environment was kind of like a library - quite & reserved - even more so than my other favorite Chinese place which has an unpronouncable name. Not quite sterile, but not exactly the Brown Jug either!

We arrived around 5pm, before the rush. Clean, good service and tasty food. Ordered from both the traditional and American menus. Would recommend.

Tea pot was soapy, but they changed out my tea and didn't charge me. Had the Hunan Beef, medium hot. Excellent presentation and taste, more than enough for two meals. I'm unsure of what a previous reviewer meant by the hot and sour soup tasted like medicine. It was a perfectly serviceable hot and sour soup. I don't think this will be a regular rotation, but I would not be opposed to dining here again.

Horrible service, and food doesn't taste that great. Was waiting for too long for my food.

Their fried stuff (General's chicken, Orange Peel Chicken) is pretty awesome. Great sauces, etc. Their Mongolian Beef is ok, meat could be better and it was probably 2/3 onions. Potstickers were pretty good, but they didn't have any hot pepper stuff on the table :( The place itself certainly isn't much, but the staff was really nice and service was great.

I had the dinner special combo which included scoop of fried rice and hunan chicken, sweet and sour soup, and a crab rangoon. -Fried rice tasted like steamed rice. No taste at all. -Hunan chicken was good. -sweet and sour soup was GROSS....tasted like medicine. -the crab rangoon was okay.

An intimate little chinese resteraunt. I enjoyed it because I usually find these small, family owned places are great deals. The price is fair and the portions are decent. Honestly it isn't the best chinese food in town, but if you're up on north campus and feel the urge, you could do far worse.

I went here for lunch one summer at the recommendation of a couple of U of M music professors. It's close to North Campus, and the lunch specials offer a ton of food for a reasonable price.

Excellent delivery service, but get your lunch order in early. The lunch combos are the best value -- entree, spring roll or crab rangoon, steamed or fried rice, and soup. I swear by their spring rolls; their hot & sour soup is the best in the area. They will make your food spicier if you ask, which I always do because even the "spicy" entrees are pretty mild. My favorite dish: Spicy Orange Beef.

My Chinese wife and I decided to come here for dinner on an early-Saturday evening. As a common American with a greasy diet, all I usually want from a Chinese restaurant is spicy chicken--just a load of fried chicken with dried peppers and maybe peanuts and potatoes. I don't want seaweed, steamed anything, weird slimy sauces, or green stalks of mystery. Their menu online revealed they had spicy chicken (辣子鸡丁), so off we went to Evergreen. When we arrived, we were the only people in there, and it was eerily quiet, with the servers and other workers just kind of sitting around. The waitress who served us was quick but not very good with her English. I ordered spicy chicken, and my wife ordered whatever. In my opinion, my meal was sub-par. The platter I received had really small, albeit numerous, chunks of chicken and what seemed like a copious amount of diced peppers. It was an assortment of vegetable: red and green peppers, dried peppers, crunchy orange things, and celery. It was $11.99 for my plate. It was good, although only moderately spicy. It seemed hard to pick out the chicken pieces in the plate. The server was good. I was afraid I would run out of Sprite and have nothing left to drink, but she came over with great timing, even as other patrons started filling the restaurant. Our service was very good, and we were in and out within an hour.

Ordered from them and they didn't bring any silverware like I asked considering I was somewhere without it and didn't have a car either. Yea let me just eat it with my freaking hands. Pissed.

After remodeling, they are loosing interest on customer. Food quality, reception, greetings, student discounts are disappearing. These were the quality they known for. Specially, reduced student discount to 5% :) (well.. just five percent) LOL!!! We used to be regular customer, but now we are looking for an options....

Needless to say, evergreen is the best Chinese restaurant in AA-Ypsi area, good location and decoration. I'm not an expert of Chinese cuisine but I have to say the food flavor of evergreen is really good, strongly recommend Sichuan fish with tofu and evergreen double happiness.

I must say that even though this is possibly the best Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor, popular and patronized by a great many Asians, and with a long, varied, interesting and customizable menu, there's something ridiculous about serving salt and pepper shrimp - only a dozen or so - IN THE SHELL and charging $14. for the privilege of figuring out how to eat it with pleasure. Does this represent a special Chinese way of eating this dish? If so, tell T K Wu 5 miles away in town, which also serves up this dish deliciously but NOT with the shrimp in the shell, guaranteeing a much more enjoyable dining experience.

My wife and I ordered one plate of beef with broccoli, which comes with a crab rangoon, white rice, and wonton soup. We placed the order at 6:21p, and the food arrived over an hour later at 7:27p. No apologies. When we called after an hour to cancel, they assured us that the food would still be warm when it arrived because the drivers use hot plates. This was an outright lie. The food was barely above room temperature. This was our first and last experience with this restaurant.

One of the best lunch values in town. Entree, rice, soup, spring roll and salad for $8 or less.

Food is good as long as you know which one to order. Some good & authentic menu: taiwanese chicken, spicy fish soup & salt pepper calamari. The service is not that good though, a 3.5 stars restaurant for me.

Typical but solid Chinese restaurant. We used to love getting takeout or a quick dine in when I worked across the street. It was a good choice for lunch. I had a fave thing here, the sesame shrimp with steamed rice and hot and sour soup. It was reliable and reasonable. The tea and soup is always hot and the service was always polite and fast, accurate on deliveries which is important too.

A very pleasant surprise. I never really liked Chinese food until actually visiting the place and being introduced to dishes which seemed largely unknown here in the US... at least, unknown to a non-Chinese like me. If fluorescent orangey gooey deep fried fatty sweetness is your desire, Evergreen may deliver just fine judging by the cross section of happy patrons there last night. If however you prefer dishes more authentically Chinese, I can personally guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised. Each dish was bursting with flavor, with the eggplant and minced pork, cooked with added chili by special request being the standout. Delicious! The crispy duck was also very good as was the pan fried noodles and shrimp. The bok choy with black mushrooms was deliciously seasoned if slightly too cold by the time it got to the table. The pickled vegetable appetizer was just what you'd expect. If I lived here, I'd definitely go back...and then order the bitter melon with egg which a table near us ordered leaving me jealous and drooling. Colorful, beautiful food! A simply fabulous neighborhood Chinese restaurant.

I ordered carry-out today. I realized they overcharged me 4 bucks after I got home. then I called the restaurant and over the phone they admitted they got the price wrong for one of the dishes but I needed to go back. when I got back, the manager, who made the mistake, did not even apologize for all the trouble that they caused when he passed by me several times. this is the worst service I have ever seen. the amount of the food was obviously cut down compared with that for dine-in. and one of the most expensive dishes called black pepper short barely had any meat and tasted like burned. I am totally dissatisfied with their food and service today and I will never go there again.

We've had many very good experiences here from the Chinese menu. Mu-shu pancakes and various soups and stuff I don't remember. I do like my Americanized Chinese food, and I got the General Tso here once. The only flavors I got out of it were extreme sweetness and fried dough. When I first came to Ann Arbor, TK Wu made me think that General Tso could be pretty good. But that turned out to be an anomaly; all other Chinese restaurants in AA fall into lockstep with this miserable rendition.

We have eaten at the Evergreen Restaurant for several years and have never been disappointed. Even when it is crowded the ambiance is perky and cheerful. It's easy to forget that you are in a strip mall next to a busy marketplace! And if you prefer, takeout is a painless experience. The food is well-portioned and reasonably priced. A Chinese menu is offered with some more traditional Chinese offerings and there is also an American menu for those not used to such dishes as "marinated pork hoof". The food is consistently tasty, whatever we have ordered, regardless of time we have gone. Wait staff is plentiful and responsive. This is a good restaurant to go to if you have children as well, as there are high chairs and the staff seems to be quite good with small kids. We've definitely been impressed over the years and will continue to go back for quite some time.

More often than not you get what you pay for and at the Evergreen you get a great value. This is truly one of my favorite places for inexpensive, consistently mediocre Chinese food with above average service making it one of the best values in Ann Arbor. I've never seen much variance in the quality of the food - it has never been terrible and never exceptional - it is always in the acceptable range. The lunch experience: Shortly after you arrive menus and a pot of tea join you. After ordering, a salad (I don't understand a salad at a Chinese restaurant but it is there and I enjoy it) and an egg roll materialize. Then before you know it the main dish is there and then after some more tea you are back to work (early and caffeinated) - it is a fast and pleasant experience. I've finally come to appreciate the retro feel and green decor of the place... Hunan Beef, hot and sour soup and a spring roll is my favorite lunch special. If you want it spicy ask for it spicy (1 out of 3 times it comes back spicy).

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
